Kansas basketball: All-time Bill Self era Jayhawks team
Point Guard: Frank Mason (2013–2017)
While it’s difficult not putting Sherron Collins at the starting point guard, it’d be equally difficult not putting Frank Mason. The career Mason had at Kansas was nothing short of legendary, and his prestigious resume tells the whole story:
- Four-time Big 12 champion
- 2017 Consensus National Player of the Year
- 2017 Consensus first-team All-American
- 2017 Big 12 Player of the Year
- One-time first-team All-Big 12
- Two-time second-team All-Big 12
- No. 6 Career points at Kansas (1,885)
In his historic 2017 season, Frank Mason totaled 20.9 points and 5.2 assists per game. Mason was dominant, becoming the consensus choice for National Player of the Year and leading Kansas to the Elite Eight where they were defeated by Oregon. In that game, Mason led the Jayhawks in scoring with 21 points.
It’s just a matter of time until Mason joins other Kansas basketball legends in the rafters of Allen Fieldhouse. He’s certainly earned his place among them.
After Kansas, Mason was taken in the early in the second round of the NBA Draft. He’s currently playing on a two-way contract with the Milwaukee Bucks’ G League affiliate the Wisconsin Herd.
Others considered: Tyshawn Taylor, Devon Dotson, Mario Chalmers
Since Self came to Kansas in ’03, he’s put together some tremendous teams, and these guys were the best of the best on their squads. KU basketball has had more than its fair share of legends, and there are more to come as long as Bill Self sticks around.
