Goal One: Go undefeated in non-conference games

It’s been over a decade since Kansas football began a season 3-0. It’s another sad statistic that shows just how bad of a funk this program has been in, but 2020 could be the year for the Jayhawks; however, they probably won’s start 3-0.

Traditionally, teams play the first three games of their season against opponents from outside their conference. Generally, the first two games are against weaker opponents from the FCS or a non-power five conference, and the third is a team from a different power five conference. For example, Kansas played FCS Indiana State, Sun Belt Coastal Carolina, and then ACC Boston College last season.

While the Jayhawks pulled off a massive upset on the road beating Boston College 48-24, they also lost at home to Coastal Carolina 12-7.

Here’s the beginning of Kansas football’s 2020 schedule:

  • New Hampshire – 9/5/20
  • @ Baylor – 9/12/20
  • Boston College – 9/19/20
  • @ Coastal Carolina – 9/26/20

It’s strange to play a Big 12 game so early in the season, but there’s no reason why the Jayhawks can’t beat all of their non-conference opponents. New Hampshire is a middle of the road FCS team, Boston College is solid but it’s a home game and the Jayhawks won last year, and finally, Kansas should be ready for some revenge on Coastal Carolina.

Winning all of their non-conference games is a great goal for this team. It’d show growth, and that the Jayhawks aren’t a pushover like in years past. Plus they’d be halfway to a bowl game (more on that later).
