Kansas basketball is the best team in the nation with a win at Baylor
Kansas basketball is already the best team in the country from an analytical standpoint, but they can make it official with a win on the road this Saturday against Baylor.
Get ready folks, the Kansas basketball vs. Baylor game this Saturday in Waco is going to be a big one. It’s got major implications for the Big 12 title, plus the winner will likely be the number one team in the nation according to the AP Poll; however, the game probably won’t have much impact on NCAA Tournament seeding.
The Jayhawks and Bears have both locked up one seeds barring total meltdowns at the end of the season, so this game won’t really matter in that regard. Still, the winner will more than likely go on to win the Big 12.
At 12-1, Kansas basketball is just one game behind Baylor who is currently 12-0 with a game tonight on the road against Oklahoma. Assuming the Bears pick up the win against the Sooners, the Jayhawks will have a chance to even up their record with Baylor, and give themselves at least a shot for a tie of the Big 12 title.
Both teams will still have four games left after facing each other, so there could be losses within those four games.
Here’s Baylor’s remaining schedule:
- @ Oklahoma – Tuesday, Feb. 18 (Today)
- Kansas – Saturday, Feb. 22
- Kansas State – Tuesday, Feb. 25
- @ TCU – Saturday, Feb. 29
- Texas Tech – Monday, March 2
- @ West Virginia – Saturday, March 7
Those final two games for the Bears are going to be tough, especially the road game at West Virginia. After they face Baylor, Kansas has a fairly soft schedule until the take on Texas Tech in Lubbock to finish up regular season Big 12 play.
The good news for the Jayhawks is that they’re one of the best games in the country. Many major analytics outlets including KenPom, Torvik, and Sagarin rank Kansas as the best team in college basketball, and other metrics like BPI and NET put them in the top five.
With a win over Baylor, Kansas will likely jump Gonzaga in the AP Poll and become the number one team in the country with less than a month until Selection Sunday. That’s peaking at the right time, plus the Jayhawks would control their own destiny in winning another Big 12 title.
Get ready for a wild one in Waco.
