Kansas basketball returned to the top five in the newest AP Poll after dropping to number six last week.

Kansas basketball was knocked out of the top five earlier this month for the first time this season after a home loss to then #4 Baylor. The Jayhawks dropped to #6, but with a pair of road wins against Texas and Oklahoma, Kansas jumped back up to number three in the country.

Here’s this week’s AP Poll top five and the amount of points each team received from voters:

  1. Baylor 1,591
  2. Gonzaga 1,588
  3. Kansas 1,470
  4. San Diego State 1,422
  5. Florida State 1,335

While the Jayhawks’ two road wins last week were impressive, Kansas’ rise had more to do with teams losing than anything else. #3 Duke, #4 Auburn, and #5 Butler all lost, naturally, the #6 Jayhawks would move up to #3 in the country behind Baylor and Gonzaga, who also flipped after last week.

Other Big 12 teams in the top 25 this week include #14 West Virginia and #18 Texas Tech, making it a total of four Big 12 teams in this week’s poll. That’s good for second-most behind the Big Ten, which has five teams.

Speaking of the Big 12, Kansas basketball’s Isaiah Moss was named the eleventh Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after his performances against Oklahoma and Texas. He had his best game as a Jayhawk against the Sooners, knocking down six three-pointers and scoring 20 points in Devon Dotson‘s absence.

This week, there probably won’t be a ton of movement in the top five unless something crazy happens. Baylor has the best chance to lose this week, as they’ll face the Florida Gators (who received votes) in the Big 12/SEC Challenge this Saturday. Florida State will also have a tough road game this week against Virginia, who received votes.

Kansas basketball has a relatively easy week.

They’ll play two home games, one against in-state rival Kansas State, and the other in the Big 12/SEC challenge against a Tennessee team that struggles with consistency.

The AP Poll may not really matter for basketball, but it’s a nice measure of success. The higher the Jayhawks go, the more success they’re having, so moving back into the top five is definitely a good thing for this team. You can catch the Jayhawks take on the Wildcats tomorrow night at 6:00 PM on ESPN2.
