Kansas basketball: A confident Isaiah Moss would be huge for Jayhawks

Kansas basketball’s Isaiah Moss could be the spark the Jayhawks need this season.

Kansas basketball has lacked consistent shooting this season, and a lot of that blame went to Isaiah Moss. The Iowa grad transfer was supposed to become the Jayhawks’ new sharpshooter, and also help spread the floor for Udoka Azubuike and Devon Dotson.

Moss hadn’t played bad, he was just inconsistent and didn’t show up at times. For example against Dayton, Moss only attempted one shot the entire game despite playing 36 minutes. On the road against #18 Villanova, Moss went 0-5 on the day, with no points, and against #16 West Virginia, Moss once again failed to score and only put up two shot attempts the whole game.

The good news is that Moss might have finally found his groove.

Last night against the Sooners, Moss had one of his best games as a Jayhawk. He scored a season-high 20 points on 7-13 shooting, including 6-11 from behind the three-point line. The big game brought Moss’ season three-point percentage up to 39.4%, which is the second-highest on the team among those with at least 10 attempts (Agbaji is shooting 39.5%.).

If Moss can consistently knock down shots like he did against Oklahoma, there’s no reason why he couldn’t crack the starting lineup in the future. His ability to shoot provides a much needed dynamic for the Jayhawks this season, considering Kansas’ top two players both rely on scoring in the paint.

The thing is, Moss probably won’t be able to replicate that performance on a nightly basis, and that’s okay. He doesn’t have to hit six threes a night, just two or three a game would be enough to spread the floor.

Kansas basketball needs a confident Isaiah Moss that can knock down both the three-ball and the mid-range jumper. It balances the Jayhawks and provides benefits for Dotson and Azubuike in addition to the points Moss scores. The game last night against Oklahoma may have been his breakthrough moment, so let’s see if Moss can stay hot from behind the arc against the Longhorns.

The Jayhawks will need it too, especially if Dotson doesn’t play. You can catch the Jayhawks’ next game this Saturday on the road against Texas at 1:00 PM central time on ESPN.
