Velton Gardner, Sophomore RB

Kansas football lost senior running back Khalil Herbert to the transfer portal right before the Jayhawks were set to kickoff vs. TCU. The loss of Herbert, Kansas’ leading rusher, was a huge blow to the Jayhawks, and it was up to freshman Velton Gardner to pick up the slack.

Of course, Kansas still has first-team All-Big 12 running back Pooka Williams, but Williams can’t do it all. Khalil Herbert was actually Kansas’ leading rusher until he decided to leave.

Gardner had 26 attempts in the 2019 season for a total of 138 yards and two touchdowns. Keep in mind, Gardner didn’t begin to see serious action for the Jayhawks until the fifth game of the season.

Look for Gardner to get many more attempts next year, playing Robin to Pooka Williams’ Batman.
