Kansas basketball held steady in the latest AP Poll, but a new Big 12 team just cracked the top five.

In the latest AP Poll, Kansas basketball held steady at number three in the country behind number one Gonzaga and number two Duke. The Jayhawks received 1,613 points from the voters, and are only 32 away from the Blue Devils.

The good news for Kansas is that they have a chance to take down a fellow top five program this weekend in Allen Fieldhouse.

The Baylor Bears cracked the top five this week after previously being ranked sixth after winning an impressive Big 12 opener at home against Texas 59-44. This week, they’ll take on a tough Texas Tech team on the road. The Red Raiders were ranked number 22 this week, making the Tuesday night matchup an important one.

Also of note, the West Virginia Mountaineers dropped one spot to number seventeen after losing a 53-60 game against the Jayhawks.

If the Jayhawks can win on the road this Wednesday night against Iowa State and Baylor can beat Texas Tech tomorrow, the two top five programs would meet this Saturday in Allen Fieldhouse in a major conference clash.

The matchup will have major Big 12 championship implications, not to mention, it could help decide who gets a one seed in the 2020 NCAA Tournament. Along with the Jayhawks, the Baylor Bears are one of the top teams in the conference, and are looking for their first ever Big 12 regular season title.

The Kansas basketball vs. Baylor game was already important, but now, it means that much more. The winner of the series could very well be the first seed in the Midwest region come March, and there’s no doubt that the Jayhawks are eager to return to Big 12 dominance.

Beating Baylor is the first step.
