Kansas basketball has a tough matchup to open up conference play today against #16 West Virginia. The Mountaineers are coming off of a massive win over former #3 Ohio State as they look to take down their second top-five team in a row.

West Virginia’s one loss this season came to St. John’s on the road by two points. Since then, the Mountaineers have won their last four games.

The Jayhawks rebounded last Sunday on the road against Stanford with a 72-56 victory after losing to Villanova the week before. It wasn’t a great game, but Kansas got it done against the Cardinal.

This week, Kansas will have to focus on contending with the Mountaineer’s depth and physical brand of basketball.

West Virginia currently has 12 players averaging over eight minutes per game, and ten players averaging over ten minutes per game. Head coach Bob Huggins goes deep into his bench during every game, and the Jayhawks have to be ready to face a multitude of different lineups.

Kansas also has to be ready for a battle in the paint.

The Mountaineer’s two highest scorers are big men Oscar Tshiebwe and Derek Culver. The good news for the Jayhawks is that they’re deep with talented big men, including Udoka Azubuike, David McCormack, and Silvio de Sousa.

This is an important game for Kansas basketball if they want to reclaim control of the Big 12. West Virginia is a contender this season, so getting a win over the Mountaineers would be a good start to conference play and another Big 12 title.

Not only that, but going undefeated at home in back to back seasons would be very cool.

It all starts this afternoon.
