Kansas football: Strength coach leaves Jayhawks for Missouri
Former Kansas football Sports Performance Director Zac Woodfin was hired away from the Jayhawks by Kansas’ chief rival: Missouri.
After joining Kansas football and 2017, Zac Woodfin, the Jayhawks’ strength coach, left the program. It was announced officially last Thursday that Missouri would hire Woodfin.
The loss hurts the Jayhawks, not only because they lost a valuable member of their staff, but also because of the destination of Woodfin’s new team. The Tigers’ head coach Eliah Drinkwitz made a statement saying:
"“Zac brings energy, expertise and toughness to Mizzou. He’s played and developed players at the highest level and we can’t wait for him to get started with our program.”"
Kansas was Woodfin’s first job in a power-five conference. He previously spent time with Southern Miss, UAB, and the Green Bay Packers. Woodfin also spent time in the NFL as a player after playing football and graduating from UAB in 2004.
Interestingly, Kansas basketball strength coach Andrea Hudy also left Kansas recently. Hudy left the Jayhawks for Texas earlier this year, and it looks like there’s a pattern beginning to develop.
Currently, there’s no word on a replacement for Woodfin on the Kansas football staff.
Given that 2019 was head coach Les Miles’ first season with Kansas football, it seems like Woodfin must not have wanted to stick around. On Joining Missouri, Woodfin said:
"“I’m excited to coach in the best conference in college football and coach for a man like Coach Drinkwtiz. Every single aspect of this job fires me up and energizes me. I’m fortunate and blessed and I’m going to go above and beyond to do more than what is expected in order to help the program. I can’t wait to get going.”"
The good news for Kansas football is that Les Miles is a well-connected coach. It’ll be interesting to see who Miles brings in to succeed Woodfin, and how long it will take for him to find the replacement.
Kansas football is going through a building phase with Les Miles. It’s expected that not everyone will be along for the ride, for one reason or another.
