Kansas basketball: Three new Jayhawks to watch at Late Night in the Phog
Late Night in the Phog is upon us, which means the new Kansas basketball season is right around the corner. Which new Jayhawks are going to be key contributors this season?
After the smoke cleared, it was obvious that this was one of the most unusual off-seasons in Kansas basketball history. The Jayhawks lost out on five-star recruit RJ Hampton to an overseas team, but also retained Devon Dotson and even more surprisingly, Udoka Azubuike.
Kansas also picked up grad transfer Isaiah Moss from Iowa, and other high-level recruits including Jalen Wilson, and Tristan Enaruna.
With Late Night in the Phog, Kansas fans will get their first look at the 2019-20 squad, plus the freshman and transfers that will be joining the Jayhawks this season. Here’s who to keep your eye on:
Jalen Wilson joins the Jayhawks as a four-star recruit from Denton, Texas. The six-foot-eight-inch small forward was the best recruit Kansas landed this season according to 247 Sports, and will probably get significant minutes this season as a freshman.
Wilson has a dynamic skill set, with the ability to shoot the ball fairly well and get to the rim off the drive. His height makes him a potential matchup problem at his position this season as well.
Kansas basketball tried to improve a weakness with Isaiah Moss, who should provide some solid perimeter shooting for the Jayhawks. The senior transferred to Kansas this season from Iowa and should make an immediate impact for Kansas.
Moss will also bring a level of experience to Kansas, having started at Iowa since he was a freshman.
Last season though, moss shot 42% from behind the three-point line. If there’s anything this Kansas team needs this year or needed last year, it’s someone who can spread the floor with their shot.
Probably the player with the most upside potential on this list, Tristan Enaruna could potentially be an NBA star. The former four-star recruit has considerable athleticism and the ability to drive and score. Head coach Bill Self even compared the new recruit to Andrew Wiggins and Kelly Oubre:
"“He would remind KU fans of a Kelly Oubre and Andrew Wiggins-type from his size, athletic ability and skillset.” – Bill Self"
Enaruna is quick, explosive, and should be a lot of fun to watch in the future. Just look at this video of him posterizing some poor guy:
With all the new talent to watch in the scrimmage, plus the performance of Snoop Dogg, this should be one of the most fun Late Night in the Phog events of all time.
For those that plan on coming, the gates open at five in the afternoon for the general public (you should get there well in advance). If you can’t make it through, the game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as well as Kansas’ linear networks like Cox.
