It was announced yesterday that Steven Sims Jr., a former Kansas football wide receiver, would make the 53-man roster for the Washington Redskins. With a bright future, Sims has taken the first step toward a prosperous NFL career.

A three-star recruit out of high school, Sims has shattered every expectation since the moment he signed with Kansas. In his freshman year, Sims played in 11 games and started six, making an immediate impact on the Jayhawks offense.

Sims went on to have one of the best careers of a wide receiver in the history of Kansas football. He finished third in all-time in receptions with 214 receptions, second all-time in receiving yards with 2,582 yards, and second all-time in career touchdowns with 19.

After completing his four years at Kansas, Sims went undrafted and ended up signing with Washington Redskins.

Sims was one of the many players vying for a roster spot on the Washington offense, Sims certainly earned the spot with his preseason play. His versatility both as a wide receiver and return man certainly made a more intriguing player.

He finished the preseason with one touchdown on three receptions for 32 yards. Sims really shined in the return game though, where he returned two punts for 40 and 41 yards. Head coach Jay Gruden has been outspoken about Sims calling him “electric:”

"“When you watch Steven out here in practice and some of the games, I think when he has the ball in his hands, he’s a very exciting player, electric.”"

Sims made the cut, but that’s just the beginning step in a long and uncertain process. He seems to have set himself up in a good position though, having the head coach compliment him on the record is certainly a good sign.
