The Kansas basketball team wore crimson uniforms for Monday night’s win over Texas. Fans across the country are still debating the Jayhawk wardrobe choice.
The crimson uniforms the Jayhawks wore Monday looked ok. I’m glad Devonte Graham got his wish. Gary Bedore wrote in the Kansas City Star of Graham’s request to wear the “red” uniforms. Coach Self agreed. After the Texas Tech game, Graham could probably ask for a lot of things.
I thought Graham, the Raleigh, North Carolina native, liked the red because that is what North Carolina State wears. Maybe while growing up he had dreams of one day playing ball for the Wolfpack? I wonder if they ever talked to him? Considering all their coaching changes, he probably was overlooked.
The last time the Jayhawks wore crimson uniforms was in a 2012 exhibition game, according to Bedore’s story. They had not worn crimson in a regular season game in six years. The Jayhawks won both games.
Jayhawks have not always done well in Crimson uniforms
I did recently see a replay of the Kansas basketball team in crimson uniforms during the 1986 final four. It was a little startling to see Danny Manning and the Jayhawks in that color. I have a difficult time following them in crimson. As a matter of fact, I had the same problem Monday night. That 1986 game had a lousy outcome to that devil of a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

During Monday night’s Texas game, Jayhawk radio analyst Greg Gurley shared his experience requesting the team wear crimson uniforms. Gurley told play by play man Brian Hanni he asked coach Roy Williams about the special uniforms. Williams reminded Gurley red is the color Arizona wears and refused to discuss it further. Most Kansas basketball fans don’t like Arizona either. I’m glad the Jayhawks don’t wear Crimson very often.
