Gary Woodland returns to work after some Kansas basketball
By Stan Unruh
Former Kansas golf standout Gary Woodland is back in action this weekend. The Phoenix Open winner took time away from the golf course to see some Kansas basketball.
Kansas basketball fans saw a lot of heroes at Allen Fieldhouse over the past week. The University honored members of the 2008 National Championship team. Two members of that team, former Jayhawk All-Americans Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins had their jerseys retired.
Last season’s National Player of the Year Frank Mason stopped in to check on his former running mate Devonte Graham. Some say Mason’s face on the Allen Fieldhouse big screen helped inspire the team to Saturday’s rally over West Virginia. Last season’s one and done star Josh Jackson made the trip to Lawrence to see the Jayhawks overwhelm the Sooners Monday night.
Former Jayhawk golfer Gary Woodland also took last weekend off the PGA Tour. After collecting $1.2 Million for winning the Phoenix Open three weeks ago, he deserved a break. Woodland stopped by the fieldhouse on Saturday. As a matter of fact, he had the opportunity watch Bob Huggins get sent to an early shower.
The Topeka native missed the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, his last tournament. There is a much better chance for him at the Honda Classic this week at PGA National’s Champion Course at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Woodland fired the final three rounds in the 60s and just missed a win there last season. He finished tied for second at -8 just four shots back of winner Rickie Fowler.

Going into the weekend, Woodland is ranked No. 26 in the World. That’s very impressive considering some of the names who follow him on that list. Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson are listed after Woodland. You can watch Woodland on the Golf Channel Thursday and Friday. I expect him to make the cut and get some quality TV time on CBS this weekend.
