Kansas basketball looks mighty good in the first sample of the NCAA tournament bracket. The tournament committee believes in the Jayhawks.

Kansas basketball fans were pleasantly surprised Sunday. The NCAA Division-one men’s basketball committee gave us a little taste of what they are thinking. For the second year the decision makers teased fans with their peek at the top 16 teams. There are a few surprises and the Jayhawks look great.

The bracket that counts is still a month away. However, Sunday’s bracket included Kansas basketball as a No. 2 seed and No. 6 overall. Duke, Auburn and a team from the American Conference not named Wichita State are also on the 2 line.  Bill Self’s guys are in the West Regional that includes a very talented Purdue team as the No. 1 seed.

As a matter of fact, no Big 12 conference school earned a No. 1 seed in this sample of the top 16. Texas Tech is a No. 3 seed in the East Regional and Oklahoma is a No. 4  seed in the Midwest. I am surprised West Virginia didn’t receive some attention in this early sample. On the other hand, the Mountaineers have had such a tremendous struggle. Coach Huggins will use this as motivation. Hopefully, he won’t use it on their visit to Allen Fieldhouse Saturday.

Jayhawks deserve the attention

Kansas basketball fans are still hurting from the Saturday loss at Baylor. Sunday’s pleasant news helped and made their weekend. Some Jayhawk fans laughed at the No. 2 seed. The selection committee is not laughing. Kansas basketball earned this consideration and although they’ve had their ups and downs, this team is very capable.

This mid-February effort to generate interest in the NCAA tournament for CBS really isn’t necessary. Kansas basketball fans believe in Bill Self. This Jayhawk team is sometimes difficult to watch. A month from now we won’t want to stop watching them.  I think a No. 2 seed looks great for the Crimson and Blue.
