The Kansas basketball team is on their annual journey to Morgantown. Here is what you need to know when the Jayhawks battle the Mountaineers

The trip to Morgantown, West Virginia is no picnic for any team. Just getting there from anywhere is a challenge. On the other hand, the Jayhawks have to ignore the journey and focus on the opportunity to take over the top spot in the conference race.

Last season’s 16-point loss was tough to watch. Devonte Graham did score 17 points in that one. He actually outscored Frank Mason that night and chipped in 3 assists but committed 4 turnovers. Svi Mykhailiuk hit a pair of three point shots and scored just 6 points. Other than Josh Jackson, those were the highlights. This is a new season and we all know who won the rematch.

Jevon Carter is the key to the West Virginia success this season. He’s averaging 16 points, almost 7 assists and nearly 4 steals a game. He and Daxter Miles lead the Mountaineers in scoring but Carter drives the bus and it was on a roll  until Saturday in Lubbock.  They had not lost since the season opener to a good Texas A&M team. Since then they’ve beaten a lot of good teams including Virginia, Oklahoma, Baylor and Oklahoma State.  Huggins and company will be in a lousy mood after what happened against Texas Tech.

Here is where to watch the Jayhawks play the Mountaineers Monday.

Date: January 15

Keys to Victory

The Jayhawks must protect the basketball against the press and crash the glass. The Mountaineers are not a great shooting team but they hustle for rebounds. As a matter of fact, West Virginia leads the Big 12 in grabbing offensive rebounds. If Bill Self’s guys get beat on the boards they will get beat on the scoreboard. Devonte Graham will have his hands full with Carter.  We need to see the same Malik Newman who torched Iowa State. The Jayhawks also need big games from Lagerald Vick and Svi Mykhailiuk on Monday night.
