Kansas football coaches are busy amid the first ever December early signing period. Coach David Beaty is celebrating the news on social media.

Kansas football coaches are celebrating a few early Christmas gifts. The new 72-hour-early signing period started Wednesday morning. For the first time, college football coaches are busy recruiting student athletes in the middle of December. After the 1-11 season, the Jayhawks missed out on a bowl game. Beaty and his staff need to bring in some athletes to help them earn a bowl berth.

Just after 5 a.m. Wednesday, coach Beaty or whoever is running his Twitter account started communicating the good news on recruiting. The first tweet welcomed “Big Tight end” Mavin Saunders. The 6-foot-5, 265 pound Florida State grad transfer indicated earlier in the week he would use his final year of eligibility to wear Crimson and Blue.

In addition to Saunders, Beaty announced a pair of Baltimore area athletes are headed to Lawrence. Safety Jeremiah McCullough and Davon Fegurson, a safety and kick returner, both played at Hartnell College in northern California.

They will compete for playing time in the defensive backfield with Elijah Jones from Ellsworth Community College in Iowa and Najee Stevens-McKenzie a transfer DB from ASA College in New York. Kansas football fans know Clint Bowen can use all the help possible in the Jayhawk secondary.

Jayhawks need offensive line help too

In addition to the defensive backfield, Beaty tweeted up the addition of defensive end Azur Kamara. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound defensive end will transfer from Arizona Western. He had 12 and a half sacks and forced three fumbles last season. He joins defensive tackle Charles Cole, a transfer from Butler Community College.

As a matter of fact, all the announcement early Wednesday involved junior college transfers. Some say Beaty needs to focus on recruiting just high school athletes. On the other hand, Beaty needs to win now and he needs bodies. He did announce the addition of two high school offensive linemen early Wednesday.  Wichita Collegiate’s 6-foot-5, 250-pound  Mac Copeland will join 6-foot-5, 300-pound Jacobi Lott from Amarillo, Texas, in Crimson and Blue.  I think adding blockers is critical to the Jayhawk success in 2018.
