Kansas football fans are trying to recover from a disappointing 2017 football season. A close look at social media indicates many fans are apathetic.

Ten seasons ago, Kansas football fans were enjoying some of the best of times. The Jayhawks were coming off an amazing 2007 season. The stands at Memorial Stadium were 50,000 plus full to watch one of the best teams in Jayhawk history.

That 2007 team finished with a win in the BCS Orange Bowl. As a matter of fact, a friend told me she was shopping at a big box store in Lawrence last week. The retailer had a big screen television above an area with KU merchandise. The television featured a replay of the Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech.

Obviously, some fans are not apathetic toward Kansas football. However, compared to what we saw happen in Tennessee over the past ago, Kansas football fans have little energy to spend. I’m not suggesting fans do what the Vol fans did. They destroyed a coaching search and forced the university to fire athletic director John Currie. He used to run the athletic department up the street in Manhattan and had only been on his new job in Knoxville for 8 months.

A search of social media shows little from Kansas football fans other than a few polite mentions here or there. I found none of the enthusiasm and thankfully little of the anger we saw in Tennessee. Considering coach David Beaty’s job ahead that may be good. On the other hand, is it possible Kansas football fans are worn out? After years of mediocrity, Kansas football fans are just ready to accept a weak football program?

Next: Coach David Beaty needs to recruit some offensive linemen

If so, it doesn’t say much for the university’s Raise the Chant Campaign.  I hope I’m wrong. Maybe Kansas football fans have decided patience is the key and are quietly expecting the best. The 2018 college football season is a long way off.  Let’s enjoy Kansas basketball.
