Kansas football wrapped up a disappointing season in Stillwater. The Jayhawks fell 58-17 to Oklahoma State and immediately started work on 2018.

Other than the players and coaches, I don’t know anyone who expected David Beaty’s Kansas football team to win Saturday in Stillwater. The Cowboys got embarrassed a week ago at home and were hungry for redemption.  They scored easily on the opening 74-yard, 7 play drive that included a 54-yard completion.

Quarterback Peyton Bender surprised most Kansas football fans when he ran on the field to begin the game. Typical of the Jayhawks, the Air-Raid started with two three and outs. As a matter of fact, several early throws by Bender were off and the Cowboys sacked him.

Once again, the KU offensive line looked dreadful.  On several occasions, the Cowboys rushed three. Five Jayhawk offensive linemen could not contain them. Since Bender doesn’t move from the pocket or know when to throw it away, the Jayhawks suffered. In addition, Cole Moos also shanked one early punt giving the Cowboys excellent field position.

What we saw in the first quarter was typical of what Kansas football fans have seen all season. Couple those miscues with additional injuries on defense and the very capable Cowboy offense had a significant advantage. The Jayhawk defense allowed the Cowboys to completed 10 of their first 13 passes for over 200 yards. Yet, the first half was far from over.

The Jayhawk offensive line did show some life late in the half. That allowed for a couple of Taylor Martin runs and ultimately a Peyton Bender to Evan Fairs 33-yard touchdown pass. There were no other significant Kansas football game highlights other than Gabe Rui’s 50-yard field goal and Steven Sims reaching 2,000 career receiving yards.

Beaty received good news following the loss

Immediately after the game, Kansas Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger issued a statement in support of coach David Beaty. Any fans hoping for a different outcome on the field or with Beaty are disappointed. Give Zenger credit for taking action on something toward next season.  Most fans are just glad the 2017 season is finally finished.
