Kansas basketball: Joel Embiid making Jayhawk fans proud

LOS ANGELES, CA - NOVEMBER 13: Joel Embiid

Former Kansas basketball standout Joel Embiid continues to impress everyone. The 7-foot NBA star finds a way to get attention on and off the court.

Kansas basketball fans just had a small taste of the amazingly talented Joel Embiid. As a matter of fact, I wish Bill Self had Embiid in a Jayhawk uniform through 4-years of college eligibility. Despite the time he missed with injury, just imagine the fun and the success.

Embiid is healthy and getting stronger, smarter and wowing NBA fans with each game. I still think he deserved the league’s top rookie honor last season. If he continues what he did this week, Embiid could make a claim for the NBA most valuable player award this season.

Embiid took his game to another level this week. His 46 points including 19 in the 4th quarter to led the 76ers past the Lakers in LA.  The 23-year-old giant also blocked 7 shots. The folks on the west coast wanted a show and Embiid provided a big one.

After 12 games, Embiid is among the league leaders in rebounding and scoring. The man from Cameroon is averaging a double-double with 23-points and just over 11 rebounds a game for the 76ers. Those totals are just higher than his carrier numbers.

Embiid is also averaging almost 2 blocked shots a game. I’m surprised that number is not higher. Nobody knows how many shots he alters in each game. The NBA also does not record stats for how much fun someone brings to a game. Is there anyone in pro sports having more fun than Embiid?

Whether showing his smiling face on stage during the ESPY awards or using social media to tease or criticize, Embiid is always thinking. He is a tremendous ambassador for the NBA. Kansas basketball fans are proud he wore the crimson and blue.
