The 2017 Kansas football season held so much promise but is a blur of disappointment. Considering the mess, head coach David Beaty is thankful for support from university administration.

Kansas football fans remain at odds over Monday’s statement from the University Chancellor on the state of the football program. Chancellor Doug Girod said, “I maintain my belief that Sheahon (Zenger) and Coach Beaty have the right long-term vision and are doing things the right way.”

I have spoken with a number of fans did not appreciate the statement and want change. On the other hand, there are those who appreciated Dr. Girod’s comments. As a matter of fact, coach Beaty said he is very thankful.

"I certainly didn’t expect that. But what it does is it really helps the future of KU football. It helps us in recruiting."

I’m not sure Beaty is correct that the chancellor’s statement helps in recruiting. Those who have the financial authority are very disappointed with the lack of progress with the Jayhawk football team in 2017.  Will they make enough noise to prompt change?

Another nearby school with a dreadful football season took significant steps to make change this week. The University of Arkansas decided to bring hire a new athletic director. The Hogs will also have a new football coach. They have won 4 games this season.

Serious Kansas football fans believe KU needs much higher expectations for the program. Considering the multi-million-dollar “Raise the Chant Campaign,” shouldn’t Kansas have as least  similar or higher expectations than those in Fayetteville?

David Beaty’s team will play two games to finish the season. Nobody expects much from the Jayhawks Saturday against #5 Oklahoma. Is it too late for fans and university decision makers to ask for a sign of some progress?  The program missed many opportunities to show something positive. It will be interesting to see what Beaty and his coaching staff are able to do.
