The Kansas football team honored former Jayhawk great Gilbert Brown Saturday. It’s sad the Jayhawks didn’t play better and more fans didn’t attend the party.

I was excited when news broke that the Kansas football program would add all-time great defensive lineman Gilbert Brown to the Ring of Honor.  I quickly checked the schedule and thought how fortunate that the Jayhawks played Baylor that day.  I expected the Jayhawks to beat the winless Bears.

As a matter of fact, I’m sure many Kansas football fans felt badly for Brown and the players celebrating the 1992 Aloha Bowl victory.  Saturday’s loss to lowly Baylor was embarrassing for everyone.  I hate to use the term embarrassing but that is what it is for David Beaty and this Jayhawk team.

Gilbert Brown’s 1992 Jayhawk team easily rolled over Kansas State and received some national attention. They certaily didn’t win every game. Nebraska beat that Jayhawk team badly. The 1992 also lost close games at home to Colorado, Mizzou among 3 straight losses to end the regular season. It was disappointing.

Despite those setbacks, that Jayhawk team under Glen Mason played hard and smart. They earned 8-wins and a trip to the Christmas Day Aloha Bowl and celebrated the holiday with a win over BYU.

The 2017 Jayhawk team is far from a bowl trip. On the other hand, they could learn a lot from the 1992.  Kansas football fans don’t expect a perfect season or anything close to an undefeated season. However, Kansas football needs to show some progress and be competitive each week.At this point, David Beaty needs to take a long look his 1-8 team and make some significant changes to end the season.
