Kansas football coach David Beaty is speaking out in favor of his defensive coordinator. The Jayhawk defense must find answers after giving up 65 points last week.

In July, coach David Beaty and Kansas football fans had high expectations for the 2017 season.  Remember the great news when the Big 12 announced defensive end Dorance Armstrong as preseason Defensive Player of the Year? While Armstrong played better in the loss to Texas Tech, the team gave up 65 points.

Doug Meacham’s Air Raid offense is showing the Jayhawks can put points on the board. On the other hand, they shouldn’t need to score 70 points to win games. Clint Bowen’s defense is struggling and head coach David Beaty is doing his best to show support for the longtime Kansas football assistant coach.

During his local media briefing this week, Beaty talked about his defensive coordinator and how Bowen is coping with the mess fans watch on Saturdays.

"Well my faith level is as high as it’s ever been. I think he’s one of the finest around, he really is."

I’m not sure how Beaty could say that considering what the team watched in the 46-point loss to Texas Tech.  He also mentioned Bowen’s work ethic, that the players love him and Bowen loves the university. “This university matters to him.” Beaty stressed.

Next: No quarterback controversy at KU

I know Bowen is a local guy and we all want to see him succeed.  It is not happening.  As a matter of fact, the Kansas football team defense ranks at or near the bottom in virtually every statistic. Kansas is ranked 8th in rushing defense. In pass defense, passing defense efficiency and also in total defense the Jayhawks rank tenth in the ten-team conference.

Beaty said he thinks Bowen is one of the finest. That is nice. Bowen’s defense is ruining the 2017 Jayhawk football season. As the head coach, Beaty is going to need to make some tough decisions. He needs to find a defensive coordinator as strong as his offensive coordinator.
