Tarik Black displayed tremendous leadership in one season for Bill Self and Kansas basketball. Black continues to impress me beyond the court.

Tarik Black is my favorite among all graduate transfers Bill Self recruited to play for Kansas Basketball. The 6-foot 9-inch power forward arrived from Memphis in 2013 with a smile on his face and ready to work.  The Big 12 realized Black’s value and named him pre-season newcomer of the year.

As a matter of fact, Black only averaged 5 points a game in 33 games for the Jayhawks. However, his attitude, work ethic and leadership were a very important part of that year’s team.

Teams ignored Black on NBA draft night.  He didn’t let it slow him down.  Black made the most of a summer league opportunity with Houston.  He signed with the Rockets and played a couple dozen games, was waived and signed by the Lakers.

He’s been playing in LA the past three seasons until July 1. The Lakers needed to save a few dollars. It was simply a numbers game on the court and at the bank. They released Black just hours before his $6M contract would have been guaranteed for the upcoming season, according to Mark Medina in the Orange County Register.

Black reminded us of his classy demeanor in his reaction to the bad news. Black thanked the Lakers for the amazing ride on his social media page.

"From the staff, the team, and the fans I am indescribably grateful. You all opened the doors for me to live a dream to play for such an organization. I love you all and the Lakers are forever in my heart."

I know all Kansas basketball fans hope another NBA team will add Black to their roster. He hustles after the basketball with an average of 5 rebounds in the limited minutes he plays. He can also hit from 3-point range.  Above all else, he brings a leadership quality important to any NBA locker room.
