I am going to miss Kansas basketball player Landen Lucas next season. He is now using his popularity to impact the lives of others.

I know there were times it was difficult to watch Landen Lucas on the basketball court for Bill Self’s Jayhawks. On the other hand, he was one of my favorites to watch the past two seasons.

His brain was always working and he is one smart basketball player. Not the most gifted, but nobody worked harder or could outsmart him. Bill Self certainly needed him in the paint after the Udoka injury.

Remember when he shot free throws until the wee-hours of the morning after the grueling come from behind, miracle win over West Virginia?

I didn’t play in that one but I was exhausted just watching.

Lucas knew he needed work on free throws and did the work- immediately following the game. That says all you need to know about this fine young man.

Now he’s doing something few have the chance to do. His newly formed Landen Lucas Foundation is providing funds to help kids participate in sports.

He is also having fun giving away his Kansas Basketball gear.

Not every young person has the dollars for equipment, new shoes, fees and other things necessary to compete.

Lucas’ foundation and GoFundMe page are raising the dollars to make a difference. How cool is that?

We forget the cost involved in getting and keeping kids involved in sports. It’s not cheap.

As his fund-raising page explains

"“Now, Landen knows the great value in the life lessons learned through sports and he wants to be sure that all students have the opportunity to participate and compete”"
