After four years as a member of the Kansas football team, Montel Cozart will join the Broncos at Boise State. The Bishop Miege Star had a tough time for the Jayhawks.

After earning his degree at Kansas, Montel Cozart is going to take his final year of eligibility to a new school.

In February, he announced he was going to transfer from the Kansas football program.

Who could blame him? David Beaty has other quarterback options. With his speed, Cozart could play another position.

A lot of writers and talking heads discussed that possibility last off-season. It didn’t happen and seems less likely this fall.

I certainly did not think he would start last year at quarterback.

I still remember falling out of my chair when Cozart walked on the field to in the season opener against Rhode Island – his third consecutive season opener.

While I had high hopes for Cozart, he never seemed to be able to accomplish what was expected.

He had few shining moments during his days leading Kansas football.

Among those moments for me was during his very first spring game.

I remember him drifting back to pass and checking the defense. When he didn’t see anyone open, he pulled the ball down and sprinted toward the sideline. He made a couple of nice moves and ran for a long touchdown.

On one hand, it was a meaningless spring game. On the other hand, I saw something in Cozart that gave me hope for Kansas football success.

Unfortunately, I never saw him do anything quite the same during a regular season game.

I did get excited again for him when he led Jayhawks to a win over Iowa State in his first career start.

I wish him the best at Boise State and the competition in the Mountain West Conference.
