Jarred Vanderbilt – Houston Hoops – Nike EYBL

#14 Overall, #5 Small Forward

One of the casualties of the week at Peach Jam, Vanderbilt didn’t see any action in Augusta. That won’t hurt his stock, though, as he’s widely considered one of the elite defenders in the class. Vanderbilt had been playing well in the spring and helped guide an atypically low on talent Houston program back to Peach Jam.

What’s his game like?

Vanderbilt is, along with Kevin Knox, one of the few truly elite defenders in high school right now. His length and athleticism give him the ability to guard four positions (or five, depending on the matchup) on the floor – and guard them well. He’s an aggressive, willing defender that takes pride in matchups and getting steals and stops.

The opposite side of the floor is where he has some issues, though, as his offensive game is quite a bit behind his defense. Right now Vanderbilt is strictly a slasher that makes plays from the wings. He can’t really make jumpshots, though to his credit he rarely takes them. The lack of shooting will be an issue at the next level, and we see him as more of a forward than a wing. Vanderbilt is a talented and willing passer, though, and if he were to end up at Kansas that would serve him well as a playmaking forward alongside someone like Udoka Azubuike.

Rumor Central

It’s long been thought that Vanderbilt was locked up to Kentucky. He’s from the same AAU program as current Wildcats freshman De’Aaron Fox, and many have thought that John Calipari would have no trouble getting Vanderbilt out of Texas. Kansas is still recruiting him though, and Kentucky is also after a hoard of other targets at the wing and forward spots. Texas and Baylor are both also working hard in this one. We expect Kansas to get a visit, but he could also opt to commit (to Kentucky) pretty quickly too.
