Kansas Jayhawks: Basketball Recruiting Index
By Ryan Noel
Brandon McCoy – California Supreme – Nike EYBL
#8 Overall, #4 Power Forward
McCoy was one of the fastest risers in the spring – and for good reason. The big man showed up early in the year with a rapidly improving offensive game, some newfound touch on his shot, and an even better motor than before.
What’s his game like?
McCoy is a top-shelf defender that is one of the better shot-blockers in the class. He moves around the lane with a quickness that is hard to match, and his elite athleticism allows him to challenge shots most other defenders can’t get to.
On the opposite end, McCoy is starting to show a good base skillset to work with for college coaches. Whereas last year he was strictly a dunker with no real ability to find his own shot, this year has seen McCoy set himself up for right-handed hooks with relative ease. He has even shown the ability to hit elbow and free throw line jumpers, although his consistency isn’t quite there just yet.
Rumor Central
Kansas is heavily recruiting his AAU teammate Deandre Ayton and, as such, are following McCoy pretty closely as well. Despite that attention, it seems unlikely that Kansas could land both big man from that team.
North Carolina has recently become heavily involved, and the people we spoke with at Peach Jam all seemed to think it’s a natural fit for McCoy. Still, there is some sentiment among west coast insiders that McCoy will ultimately stay pretty close to home. Either way, while Kansas would love to get him, he’s not one that fans should get their hopes up for.
