Chaundee Brown – Nike South Beach – Nike EYBL

#53 Overall, #11 Shooting Guard

One of the hotter topics over the past week, Nike South Beach’s Chaundee Brown had a great showing in North Augusta.

Jayhawks head coach Bill Self and assistant Norm Roberts watched him multiple times, and he was impressive in each of them.

What’s his game like?

Brown is a powerful 6’5″ guard with a big wingspan. He uses that length to great effect on defense, where his athleticism and strength also shine. At the next level, he projects as an elite defender, and a defensive coach like Coach Self could do far worse when looking to fill out a big class with perimeter players that can defend multiple positions.

Offensively, Brown is a bit less polished. He did prove this weekend that he is capable of shooting well from three and attacking off the dribble. He will have to continue to tighten up his handle on the ball if he wants to move beyond college as a guard, but for college he handles it well enough. His shooting was the surprise at Peach Jam, as he had a few games where it felt like he couldn’t miss. He’s the type of shooter that would play well as a wing at Kansas, as he’s best at shooting from a set position off the catch. You can spot him up and let him get open looks with the feeling hat he’ll shoot near 40% on those shots.

Rumor Central

Kansas has offered Chaundee, and he has visited before – last year for Late Night. This is one of those offers that is a bit tougher to nail down, because it comes on the coattails of a great performance in front of the staff. Given the size of the class Kansas is going to need, and Brown playing well in front of Coach Self, I’m inclined to believe Brown has a legitimate offer on the table right now.

The flip side is that I don’t know for sure just how hard Kansas is going to push for him yet. I would expect they’ll watch him again in the upcoming week and reassess one more time. After that, we’ll likely get a better idea of just how interested the Jayhawks staff is in Brown.

If he were to go to Kansas, I think the simplest comparison for him is probably Travis Releford. Florida has a pretty good leg up in this one, from what I’ve heard.
