Kansas Jayhawks: Basketball Recruiting Index

Marcus Garrett – Swagghouse Elite – Unaffiliated
#100 Overall, #15 PG
Garrett is the guy on this list that we know the least about, thanks to his team not playing in any of the big shoe events. Swagghouse Elite, which we believe is run by Garrett’s uncle, is not affiliated with a shoe company, so they’ll travel to some of the bigger events in the latter part of the July recruiting periods. We haven’t seen him in person, so we’re relying on a mix of info from a few friends that have trained Garrett a handful of times down in Dallas.
What’s his game like?
Garrett is a 6’5″ point guard with a great feel for setting his teammates up. He’s an excellent ballhandler and passer, and is very unselfish with the ball. On top of that, Garrett has the chance to be an elite defender because of his length and great hands. He’s one of the best perimeter steals guys in the country, but he doesn’t get enough credit for his rebounding and shot-blocking from the point guard position.
Like so many guys in this class, his lack of a jumper is holding him back. Unlike a lot of those guys, he has more mechanical issues to work out, and could be a much longer-term project to fix his shot. He doesn’t get a ton of lift on his shots, and his release tends to have some unnecessary motion (although we’re being told it does look much cleaner so far this summer).
Rumor Central
SMU seems like the team to beat here. Newly-minted Head Coach Tim Jankovich is a big fan and has been to see him already since taking over from Larry Brown. While Kansas has offered and does like him, with Malik Newman on board and Trae Young the top target, they seem content with where they sit. I don’t expect them to turn up the heat on Garrett, unless things go south with Trae Young quickly (and that won’t happen). If Garrett elects to draw things out, I think he’s a guy Kansas could find really attractive late in the process as recruits start flying off the board.
