Trevon Duval – We R 1 – Under Armour Association
#5 Overall, #1 Point Guard
Our pick for top overall guard in the country is Duval, who is the leading star on the Under Armour Association circuit. His time at Advanced Prep has raised some flags, and everyone is still waiting to see where he’ll play his high school ball for his senior year.
What’s his game like?
Duval is an point guard that overwhelms defenders with his athleticism and size (6’4″), similar to how a young Derrick Rose or last year’s Dennis Smith did. His hesitation moves are some of the most devastating basketball moves in the class, and he is near unstoppable when attacking from the top of the key.
His only real issue is his shot, which can be really hit or miss. His mechanics are decent, if a bit inconsistent, and he gets good elevation so there is a good basis for a coach to work with. At the college level, though, the shooting woes shouldn’t hold him back too much, especially if he heads to a school with a guard-driven offense that allows freedom to create off the dribble.
Rumor Central
Duval has said before that Kansas is one of the schools looking at him hardest, but right now Trae Young is their top priority at guard. Duval would fit in well as a lead guard in the Kansas offense, as he plays like a plus version of Tyshawn Taylor.
All that said, it’s highly unlikely he ends up at Kansas from what we’re hearing. Villanova and Maryland have prioritized him, and we have to think Kentucky will get heavily involved at some point too. Arizona is also deeply connected to the Duvals, and will likely end up getting a visit too. His choice of prep school for his senior year might give us some indication of how things will transpire, when he announces where he’s headed.
