Kansas Basketball: Recruiting News From Nike EYBL
By Ryan Noel
Las Vegas Prospects – Nevada
Top Target: Troy Brown, Jr., 2017
One of the favorites of Kansas basketball fans already because of his connections to the school – his sister plays for the women’s team – Troy Brown is an intriguing Top 20 prospect.
At around 6’6 or 6’7, Brown is mostly a point guard for this Prospects team. He has great vision and passing skills and is a very good ballhandler, which is why everyone is quick to label him as a point guard. Moving forward, especially as he looks toward the NBA, he’ll likely be called on to be a lead guard. But at the college level, it’s unclear right now what his best position will be.
Unfortunately, his lack of shooting makes it tough to use him as a wing. His strengths come with the ball in his hands, as he already shows good ability to use the pick-and-roll and can make passes to any spot on the floor. If his shot improves – and it’s not broken, he is just very inconsistent – he worth as a shooting guard that can be a secondary point guard rises exponentially.

From what we saw, though, his greatest assets may be on the other end of the floor. He is a versatile defender that gets around screens well and uses good length to smother smaller guards. At a place like Kansas, where the guards are asked to switch frequently on screens, that kind of versatility brings a lot of value to the backcourt. Also – Brown is a fantastic rebounder for a guard. He routinely battled elite big men this weekend, as his Prospects team lacks size, and won rebounding battles against most of them.
Kansas is on his list and they have offered, but we won’t know just how serious they are about him until July when the coaches are back out on the circuit. With Mike Porter no longer an option, Brown would make a lot of sense as the next target given his size and versatility. California, Arizona, and Alabama are the other schools we’ve heard mentioned for him lately.
