Big 12 Basketball: Ranking the Top 12 Incoming Players
By Ryan Noel
Jacob Young – Texas, Freshman
The Longhorns are losing a ton of production from their backcourt with the departures of Isaiah Taylor and Javan Felix. Returning guards Kerwin Roach and Eric Davis both seem poised to step in, but incoming freshman Jacob Young could also be asked to provide scoring off the bench.
Young is a small guard – only 6’0″ – with a huge reputation for scoring. He led the Adidas Gauntlet Series in scoring last summer (2015) at 27ppg, ahead of bigger names like Duke’s Frank Jackson and Arizona’s Rawle Alkins.
Young also brings some much needed long-range shooting – he was an excellent shooter in our viewing of him last year – as he went 42-100 from 3pt range in the Adidas Gauntlet events. The Longhorns lose quite a bit of shooting in Felix and forward Connor Lammert, so Young’s range could be a great asset off the bench for head coach Shaka Smart.
There’s also a lot to like defensively about Young, who was in the top 5 in steals in the Gauntlet Series. He’s quick, has active hands, and shows good instincts as a defender. With the pressure defense that Texas plays under Coach Smart, Young looks like a great fit.
