I’m A Jay-Jay-Jay-Jay-Jayhawk

As a proclaimed diehard Kansas Jayhawks fan, one of the things you absolutely have to know is the iconic fight song – “I’m a Jayhawk”. The song was written in 1912 by George “Dumpy” Bowles, and the University of Kansas Glee Club first performed it nationally in 1926.

Here are the lyrics, as you should know more than just “I’m a Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay, Jayhawk”:

"Talk about the Sooners, Cowboys and the Bears, Aggies and the Tiger and his tail. Talk about the Wildcats, and the Cyclone boys, But I’m the bird to make ’em weep and wail CHORUS: ‘Cause I’m a Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay, Jayhawk, Up at Lawrence on the Kaw– ‘Cause I’m a Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay, Jayhawk, With a sis-boom, hip hoorah, Got a bill that’s big enough To twist a Tiger’s tail, Rope some ‘Horns and listen To the Red Raiders wail– ‘Cause I’m a Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay, Jayhawk, Riding on a Kansas gale."

That, of course, needs to be in sync with your clapping ability if you plan to be at any Jayhawks event. Take a look below at the video so you aren’t the one in the stadium or fieldhouse that doesn’t know the beat.

The fight song has only been amended twice in the school’s history. In 1958, the song was slightly modified to note rivals in the Big Eight Conference. In 2010, when Nebraska and Colorado elected to leave the Big 12 Conference, the song was adapted to reflect the new the Big 12 teams. The song has not been adapted since Missouri left for the Southeastern Conference.
