Huey, Self and the Big News

One of the biggest moments of the season had nothing to do with scoring points, blocking shots, or winning championships. Instead, it was about making a dream come true for someone on the biggest stage of all of college basketball.

Head coach Bill Self told senior student manager Chris Huey he could suit up for one game, and one game only, toward the end of the season. It happened to be the Feb. 21 home match-up against TCU.

It was the best chance for the Jayhawks to have a huge lead so the former NAIA college player, whose career was cut short due to multiple collapsed lungs, could take the court with little consequences.

It look bleak for a minute.

An 11-point Kansas lead was trimmed to six with three minutes left. However, a few Jayhawk baskets gave Self the breathing room he needed to insert Huey in to the lineup.

As you can see in the video above, the senior missed his only opportunity at scoring, but the fact he was able to hear his sneakers squeak in a Big 12 game at Allen Fieldhouse was something he said he will cherish forever.
