On Wednesday, the Kansas Lady Jayhawks non-conference schedule was released. The schedule houses six of the nation’s top teams including Creighton and Oral Roberts, both NCAA tournament participants from a year ago.

Pittsburg State and Emporia State kick off the schedule on Oct. 30th, and Nov. 3rd. After these two exhibition games, the level of competition increases a notch as Oral Roberts comes to Lawrence on Nov. 10th. Oral Roberts, made it to the NCAA tournament last season after winning the Southland conference tournament championship. After a meeting with SIU-Edwardsville, Kansas takes on Creighton, another NCAA team. SIU-Edwardsville, was a WNIT participant last season.

Minnesota, Central Michigan, Xavier and Duke are all next on the schedule. Each team are worthy opponents, with the Golden Gophers making the WNIT and the other three teams being a part of Paradise Jam. Duke and Central Michigan, both were in the NCAA tournament, while Xavier enjoyed a down year.

Arkansas, Texas Southern, Purdue, Tulsa and Yale finish the non-conference tilt with each game being played at Lawrence. Purdue and Tulsa were both NCAA participants, while Arkansas, and Texas Southern were both WNIT teams.

On Saturday evening, the Kansas Lady Jayhawks defeated Colorado, 67-52 in round one of the women’s NCAA tournament.

The game which was held in Boulder, saw the Jayhawks advance as the 12-seed with an easy win. Kansas improved to 18-13 on the year, while Colorado ended their season at 25-7. Next up for the 12th-seed is 4th-seeded South Carolina on Monday. The game with the Gamecocks is scheduled for 8:35 central time.

On Saturday, the Lady Jayhawks used the absence of Colorado center Rachel Hargis, to their advantage in doing whatever they wanted mostly on offense. Hargis, was injured during the week with a sprained right MCL. Kansas used a balanced scoring effort that saw five players score in double-figures led by Carolyn Davis, and Angel Goodrich who both scored 14. Davis added eight rebounds, while Goodrich racked up eight assists. Chelsea Gardner, Monica Engleman, and Charlicia Harper each scored 12 points. Colorado shot a woeful 25% from the field, was led by Arielle Roberson who scored 11 points, and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Kansas started out slow in falling behind, 14-7 early only to rebound and grab an 37-27 advantage by halftime. The second half saw Kansas build a 20-point lead after going on a 12-2 run to start the stanza. After Engleman made a jumper, the scoreboard read 49-29 at the 14:56 mark. Colorado managed to trim the final margin down the rest of the way, but not by much.

South Carolina is next after dispatching South Dakota State on Saturday, 74-52. The Gamecocks have a 25-7 record overall, use great defense and rebounding to beat their opponents. Ashley Bruner and guard Ieasia Walker lead the way. Each scored 15 points in the team’s win in the first round. For the Lady Jayhawks to win, they will need to score over 60 points, as South Carolina has only let four teams reach this feat on the year.
