On Saturday evening the Kansas Lady Jayhawks defeated the Kansas State Lady Wildcats in an two overtime thriller, 89-80. The Lady Jayhawks had just learned they will be without guard Natalie Knight for the rest of the season after she tore her ACL on Wednesday in a game against Iowa State.

With the win, Kansas improved to 14-6 overall and 5-4 in conference, and dropped Kansas State to 12-9 overall and 3-6 in conference. The Jayhawks hadn’t won in Manhattan since 2001 making this win even more important.

Senior forward Carolyn Davis led the way for the Jayhawks, scoring 29 points, and adding nine rebounds. Chelsea Gardner added 19 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots in the win. Angel Goodrich went for 11 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots. Kansas State was led by Haley Texada, who scored 21 points, and had four rebounds with three assists.

The first half ended knotted up in a tie at 28 points apiece with neither team commanding much of a lead. Kansas State grabbed an early lead in the second half at 37-30, only to have Kansas rally and grab the lead again at 42-39. Kansas held a three-point lead after Charlicia Harper made a free throw with 38 seconds left. She missed the second attempt leaving the Wildcats a chance. Brianna Craig drained a triple, tying the game up, pushing us to an extra session. Goodrich canned a three in the first overtime to tie the game up again with 10 seconds remaining, putting us in a second overtime. Kansas grabbed control early in the second overtime thanks to Davis and Gardner giving the Jayhawks a six-point lead. The Jayhawks then made key free throws down the stretch, preserving the win.

Next up for Kansas is a game with top-ranked Baylor in Waco, Texas on Wednesday.

On Saturday evening, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls defeated Kansas Lady Jayhawks, 65-52 in Lawrence. Toni Young dominated the middle for Oklahoma State in scoring 15 points and pulling down 15 boards. The win moved the 12th-ranked Cowgirls to 15-3 and 4-2 in the Big 12 conference. Kansas fell to 12-6 overall, and 3-4 in conference.

Earlier this year, Oklahoma State beat Kansas in Stillwater, 76-59. So with Saturday’s win Oklahoma State continued their recent dominance of the Lady Jayhawks. Lindsey Keller scored 14 points, Tiffany Bias added 12 as did Kendra Suttles. Oklahoma State have won 24 games in a row that four players have scored in double figures, including 13 this year.

Kansas was led by Chelsea Gardner, who scored 14 points in the game along with nine rebounds. Natalie Knight and Carolyn Davis each scored 12 points, and senior guard Angel Goodrich added 10 points. Goodrich added six rebounds and six assists.

Kansas and Oklahoma State fought to a near draw in the first half, with the Cowgirls holding a 30-27 lead at halftime. Oklahoma State began to pull away after a Suttles made three-pointer pushed their lead to 41-34. This started a 12-5 run, getting the lead to 11. Kansas attempted to rally, cutting the lead to seven with six minutes left, but couldn’t get any closer.

Next up for the Lady Jayhawks is Iowa State on Wednesday.
