On Sunday afternoon in Hoglund Park, the Kansas Jayhawks were able to get a big win over 19th-ranked Oklahoma State, 3-2. Wes Benjamin was the winning pitcher for the Jayhawks, while Jordan Pinche picked up the save.

With the win, Kansas improved to 18-12 overall and 5-4 in conference, while Oklahoma State fell to 22-8 and 4-4 in conference. The Jayhawks win on Sunday, followed a loss to Oklahoma State, 14-3 on Saturday, and a win in the opener on Friday, 7-5.

Benjamin pitched for six innings, giving up two earned runs and four hits, while striking out three batters. He improved to 2-3 on the year, with an ERA of 5.52. Pinche looked solid during the final three innings of work, giving up just three hits en route to picking up his sixth save of the season. Oklahoma State’s Tyler Nurdin picked up the loss, going seven innings and giving up two earned runs.

Kansas used four Oklahoma State errors to assist them in this game. The scoring began in the first inning with Kansas putting two runs on the board, while the visitors scored once. Kevin Kunz and Jordan Protacio both passed home, with Kunz’s run going in as unearned thanks to a fielding mistake by the Cowboys.

In the second inning Connor McKay started it off for Kansas with a single. The DH managed to get worked along and scored off an RBI from Trevor Tharp. Oklahoma State had a chance in the sixth inning, picking up a second run from Zach Fish, only for the rally to be snuffed out by a double play from the Kansas infielders. In all Kansas managed six hits, while Oklahoma State picked up seven.

Next up for the Jayhawks is a trip to Iowa as they face the Hawkeyes on Tuesday and Wednesday. Iowa is 11-15 on the year after a win over Nebraska on Sunday.

Beginning tonight, the Kansas Jayhawks men’s baseball team will host the 19th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys at Hoglund Park. The series concludes with a game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. central time, after a meeting on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. central time.

Kansas will look to continue their recent success vs the Cowboys, as they have won five of the past six meetings against the team at home. Oklahoma State is 21-6 on the season overall and 3-2 in Big 12 conference play. Kansas enters the weekend with a record of 16-11 overall and 3-3 in conference. Kansas on the season is 6-1 at home.

Oklahoma State is led by first baseman Tanner Kreitemeier, who is batting .368. The in-fielder has six doubles, and 24 RBI’s on the season. Matt Fish is tops on the team in RBI’s with 27 and home-runs at five. The Cowboys have one of the top pitching staffs in the conference and all starts with Jason Hursh, who has a record of 3-1 and an 2.21 ERA in seven starts.

Kansas is coming off a solid game on Wednesday vs Saint Mary that saw the team pick up their sixth shut-out of the season. Drew Morovick shut down the Spires batters thanks to a spirited effort from Drew Morovick. Now the Jayhawks look for more of this against the high-powered offense of Oklahoma State and great pitching unit.

On Wednesday night, two of the best teams in the Big 12 if not the nation battled it out for the second time this season in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The ninth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks defeated the 14th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, 68-67 in two overtimes. The game should be considered an instant classic. Previously this season, Kansas fell to Oklahoma State, 85-80 on Feb. 2nd.

Naadir Thorpe and Travis Releford are the heros of the game after Thorpe hit the game-winning shot with 20 seconds left, putting Kansas ahead by one and Releford stole the ball from Oklahoma State guard Phil Forte with three seconds left. Oklahoma State had taken the lead by one point after Markel Brown hit a jumper. Kansas improved to 22-4 overall and 10-3 in Big 12 conference action, while Oklahoma State fell to 19-6, and 9-4.

Kansas was led by Jeff Withey who scored 17 points along with 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. Withey was huge in the two overtimes connecting on seven of eight free throws. Releford scored 18 points to go with six rebounds. Brown led Oklahoma State with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Marcus Smart added 16 points, and seven rebounds.

The first half went back and forth with neither team holding a lead over two points. The game was all knotted up at halftime with both teams having 26 points. The second half started out the same until Elijah Johnson canned a jumper, putting Kansas ahead by five at 36-31. Oklahoma State battled back, in grabbing the lead again at 39-38. Kansas once again stole control after McLemore hit a three-pointer putting Kansas ahead, 47-43 with 6:34 left. Oklahoma State again fought back, tying up the game at 53 with 2:34 left. Kansas once again inched to a three-point lead only to have Smart tie the game at 57 with a three-pointer with 1:15 left on the clock. Neither team scored again in regulation.

The Jayhawks failed to score a field goal in the first overtime, scoring six points thanks to free throws from Withey, and McLemore. Phil Forte nailed a huge three-pointer with one minute left, tying the game at 63, once again forcing another overtime after neither team could score again.

After avenging this loss, Kansas now gets a rematch with TCU on Saturday in Lawrence. The Horned Frogs defeated Kansas on Feb. 6th, 62-55 for their first conference win on the year. TCU hasn’t won since, including an 68-59 loss to Texas tonight.
