Like many other positions on the Kansas football roster, defensive ends has some talented guys. Though depth could be a concern if one falls to injury. Here’s a glance at the main cogs.

As the oldest guy of the group, Josh Richardson should be counted on to bring in leadership. He is a fifth-year player, that does many things good, not great. Tobin Opurum does have the potential to make a big step this season. Opurum, has a quick first step, and a fire to get to that quarterback. Double-digit sack numbers is not out of the question, though can he make the next step?

A couple of other returning guys are Dylan Avery, Kebo Agostinho, and Ben Goodman. Agostinho got lots of playing time last season as a second-year player and should once again be counted onto get into the rotation. He is putting on size, working out, and trying to gain the ability to power past the offensive line better. Avery is a former walk-on, and should star as a backup, while coaches are raving about Goodman’s off-season. The redshirt freshman is showing that he could be a major contributor this season.

One transfer from Nebraska in Josh Williams could push for playing time. The senior played in every game the last two seasons for Nebraska. He has the talent to become a starter and an impact player for Kansas.

2014 defensive line recruit Peyton Newell is now up to 350 on the bench press and can squat 600. He told Rivals.com that he likes the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Newell has an insane amount of strength and should be one of the top recruits in the state of Kansas and a top 25 defensive tackle recruit overall. He can also play at strong-side defensive end, as he had six sacks last season.

One of the top underclassmen on the DL in the country, Peyton Newell was also one of the top defensive linemen in Kansas last season even as a sophomore. He recorded 76 tackles with 26 for a loss and showed how his strength translates to not only incredible workout and combine performances, but also some great numbers against the run.

Peyton Newell received an offer from the Kansas Jayhawks on the first of the month and also has offers from TCU, Nebraska, Illinois, Baylor, Iowa, and UCLA. He recently visited Illinois and has camped at Illinois, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. Newell has attended quite a few spring games and is looking to camp at ND.

Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Kansas State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Texas Tech, and Tulsa are teams currently listed on his college choices on his Rivals profile. Peyton Newell runs a 4.85 forty with a 4.49 shuttle time and a 32-inch vertical. The top 2014 DL is a legit prospect and will be a top in-state target for KU.

Peyton Newell has received seven offers in his recruitment from Kansas, Illinois, Nebraska, TCU, Baylor, Iowa, and UCLA. Those are seven good football programs, with Nebraska headlining that list and TCU being his first offer. Three of those schools, including Kanas, are in the Big 12 while three others are in the Big Ten. UCLA represents Newell’s offer on the coast.

The 6’3″, 270 pound strong-side DE/DT has camped at Illinois, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. Peyton Newell recorded 76 tackles with 26 tackles for loss, six sacks, and four forced fumbles as the top underclassman on the defensive line in the state of Kansas. He is one of the top DLs in the state and is one of the top DL recruits in the 2014 class and overall in the state.

Newell is definitely prone to great showings at combines and camps with his immense strength. In fact, it is safe to say that he is one of the best workout warriors in the 2014 class. He can run a 4.85 forty, bench 320, squat 495, has a 4.49 shuttle time, and Newell also has a 32-inch vertical.

For more on the visit that Peyton Newell took to Illinois, check out this article from Rivals.
Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Texas Tech, and Tulsa are schools to watch for in Newell’s recruitment.
