Mario Chalmers is set to join an elite group on Saturday. The former point guard of the Kansas Jayhawks, and current Miami Heat player, will get his #15 jersey retired by the team during halftime vs Texas.

The game is scheduled for Saturday and will be televised by ESPN at 8:00 p.m. central time. Chalmers was named the 2008 Final Four Most Outstanding Player on Kansas’s championship team. He instantly hit hero status after draining a huge three-pointer in an overtime victory over Memphis in the title game.

In Chalmers three seasons at Kansas, the Jayhawks posted an 95-16 record overall, along with three Big-12 regular season titles and three Big-12 conference championships. Kansas also advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twice, one final four and the NCAA championship.

Chalmers was named to the All-Big 12 conference team all three seasons as a defender. His 283 steals rank Chalmers second all-time at Kansas for steals behind Darnell Valentine who posted 336 from 1978-81. Chalmers averaged 12 points per game and connected on 41% of his three-point attempts. After Kansas, Chalmers was picked 34th by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2008 NBA Draft, only to get traded to Miami. He last season joined Clyde Lovellette as the only Jayhawks to win an NCAA and NBA title.

Chalmers joins Wayne Simien as the second former Kansas Jayhawk during head coach Bill Self’s era to get his jersey retired. Simien had his #23 jersey hung

The 2008 Kansas basketball team finished with a record of 37-3, after cruising through the regular season and NCAA tournament. The team defeated Memphis in the final of the tournament, 75-68. Guard Mario Chalmers was named the final four MVP after leading the team in scoring. Here is a look at the season:

Kansas began the season ranked in the top five at number four. Kansas started the season off with a bang by defeating Louisiana-Monroe, 107-78.The Jayhawks then raced through the next 19 games of the season unscathed before losing to rival Kansas State, 84-75. Kansas peaked at number two before losing to the Wildcats.

Kansas got right back to their winning ways vs Colorado, two days later. On February 11th, Kansas traveled to Texas to face the 11th-ranked Longhorns. Kansas and Texas played a classic game, though in the end, the Jayhawks fell 72-69. Kansas would go onto lose one more game vs Oklahoma State before winning their final 13 games of the season.

Kansas dominated their first three opponents of the NCAA tournament before finally facing a challenge in Davidson. The upstart from the Southern Conference had one of the best players in the country in Stephon Curry. They gave Kansas a battle before losing 59-57.

Next up was the final four and a meeting with North Carolina and Roy Williams. The Jayhawks defeated the Tar Heels 84-66. Then came the final with Memphis. The Tigers were in control most of the way, before Kansas woke up in the final moments, using Chalmers hot hand en route to the win.

Kansas has had a number of good point guards over the years, here’s a look at the ten best.

1. Mario Chalmers: led the Jayhawks to the 2008 NCAA title. Named the MVP of the final four. Chalmers was very deadly from behind the three-point line. Also apt to drive the lane and find the open guy.

2. Kirk Hinrich: super shooter from behind the three-point line. Also a great distributor. One of the top guys on the all-time list for dishing out assists.

3. Jacque Vaughn: One of those glue point guards, Vaughn did all the little things. A great passer, and defender, he wasn’t much of a scorer. A traditional guard.

4. Darnell Valentine: Enjoyed four great seasons at Kansas. Known for defensive prowess, often times drew the opponents best player. Played nine seasons in the NBA after Kansas.

5. Adonis Jordan: averaged around 13 points per contest while at Kansas. Great passer and defender.

6. Aaron Miles: guard didn’t score much, though was good at finding the open man, whoever that may be. Good defender, always grabbed the top offensive guy on the other side.

7. Russell Robinson: Teamed with combo guard Chalmers to make a great backcourt in 2008.

8. Cedric Hunter: one of the top guys in Kansas history with assists. Tough guy, was never one to back away from a challenge.

9. Sherron Collins: played both guard positions. Excelled as a shooter, and defender for the Jayhawks.

10. Ryan Robertson: great passer for Kansas. Another guy who could nail an open three-pointer, though not known to be much of a scorer.
