Head coach Bill Self expressed that he was unhappy with his team in the win last week against Chattanooga and his team responded against WSU.

Nov 19, 2012; Kansas City, MO, USA; Kansas Jayhawks guard Travis Releford (24), guard Ben McLemore (23), and guard Elijah Johnson (15) watch play during the second half of the game against the Washington State Cougars at the CBE Classic at the Sprint Center.
The Jayhawks had big performances from Ben McLemore, Travis Releford, and Perry Ellis. Releford had a team-high 17 points and went 6-of-7 from the field. McLemore kept his good play going as he scored 11 points (his third straight game with double-digit points). Ellis was second on the team with 12 point, but how did he get most of his points?

Ellis went a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line and the Jayhawks as an entire team only missed two free throws all game. They went 20-of-22 from the charity stripe as a team.

The only Cougar to reach double-digit points was Washington State’s leading scorer, Brock Motum. Motum scored 14 points and also led the team with seven rebounds.

WSU shot just 29.1 percent from the field and went 4 of 22 from beyond the 3-point line. The Jayhawks also forced the Cougars to commit 14 turnovers.

On defense, Kansas got another huge performance out of Jeff Withey. Withey caused a ton of havoc for Brock Motum and the rest of Washington State. He recorded five blocks and six rebounds in the game.

Kevin Young was Kansas’ leading rebounder with ten rebounds.

The Jayhawks are now 3-1 on the season.

Kansas’ next game will be against the St. Louis Billikens. This game will be the Championship Game for the Edward Jones CBE Hall of Fame Classic. St. Louis is 2-1 on the season and defeated Texas A&M 70-49 in their semifinal game.

The No. 7 Kansas Jayhawks will play the Washington State Cougars in the championship semifinal of the Edward Jones CBE Hall of Fame Classic at the Sprint Center. WSU enters with a record of 2-1 after losing in overtime to Pepperdine 58-56.

The Jayhawks will face either Texas A&M or St. Louis on Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. or 8:30 p.m in their final game of the Edward Jones CBE Hall of Fame Classic.

Washington State is a member of the Pac-12 conference and finished ninth in the conference last season. They are located in Pullman, Washington. Their overall record last season was 19-18.

Nov. 14 2012; Pullman, WA, USA; The Washington State Cougars mascot cheers with the student section against Utah Valley Wolverines during the first half at the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum. Mandatory Credit: James Snook-US PRESSWIRE

So far this season, Washington State’s leading scorer is Brock Motum. He is averaging 17.7 points per game, but also averaging 6.7 rebounds per game. Motum’s highest scoring game was on opening night against Eastern Washington where he scored 23 points.

On the boards, the Cougars’ top two rebounders are D.J. Shelton and Mike Ladd. Shelton leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game and his most rebounds came in the game against Eastern Washington (12). Ladd is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game and had 13 rebounds in WSU’s overtime loss to Pepperdine.

This will be the second meeting between the Jayhawks and the Cougars. Kansas currently leads the series 1-0.

Kansas last met the Cougars in 1973 and won 66-51. That game was the opening round of the Jayhawk Classic. Kansas was apart of a Big Eight at that time.

Overall, this should be tougher than the Chattanooga game, but should still end in a Kansas win. Expect Jeff Withey to be huge for the Jayhawks on the boards. Also, it will be interesting to see if Ben McLemore can continue his hot play from the Chattanooga game.

The No. 7 Kansas Jayhawks will play the Chattanooga Mocs in the Edward Jones CBE Hall of Fame Classic. Chattanooga enters with a record of 1-0 after beating Tennessee Temple 88-53.

Kansas is one of four host schools for the Edward Jones CBE Hall of Fame Classic which includes: St. Louis, Texas A&M, and Washington State. Kansas won their first game of this classic against Southeast Missouri State 74-55.

Dec 17, 2011; Lexington, KY, USA; Chattanooga Mocs forward Z.
Chattanooga is a member of the Southern Conference and finished last in the North division last season. They are located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Their overall record last season was 11-21.

So far this season, Chattanooga’s leading scorers have been Z. Mason and Drazen Zlovaric. Mason was a transfer to Chattanooga from Ole Miss football. In the team’s opener, Mason had 16 points and five rebounds. Zlovaric had 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

They also have a nice defensive performance from Farad Cobb. In the Tennessee Temple game, Cobb recorded six steals for the Mocs.

This will be the third meeting between the Jayhawks and the Mocs. Kansas currently leads the series 2-0.

Kansas last met the Mocs in 2003 and won 90-76. That game was the season opener for the Kansas Jayhawks in the 2003-2004 season. It was also Bill Self’s first game as Kansas’ head coach.

According to kuathletics.com, “Kansas is 10-1 against current membership of the Southern Conference.”

Overall, this should be another easy match-up for the Kansas Jayhawks. They should defeated the Mocs without a doubt. Expect Jeff Withey to perform like he did in the season opener. Also, more Jayhawks other than Withey should be able to get into rhythm in this game.
