Charlie Weis is in his first season as the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks. He came over to Kansas after serving as the offensive coordinator at the University of Florida.

So far this season, Weis has a record of 1-5 as head coach and has zero wins in Big 12 Conference play. He has a quarterback position battle that he has still been unclear about and he’s had a “war of words” with the school paper at Kansas.

What is Weis’ midseason grade and what do you think of his first six games with the school?

George: Grade for Weis right now is a D. Rumors of the coach bullying school newspapers came up this week, showing another side of the coach. He has been slow to change game-plans and make a switch at quarterback.

Ricky: My midseason grade for Weis is a big, fat, stinking F.

To me, Weis is like the 80′s hair metal band that was once a big hit, but then thirty years later, they are a “has-been.” Weis’ only success was when he was the OC for the New England Patriots (three Super Bowl Titles). After that, he spent time at Notre Dame, Kansas City (NFL), and Florida, but never really did anything great. He’s that coach that won Super Bowls, but cannot do much anymore.

Also, Weis got mad at the Kansas school news paper for writing a negative article about his football team. Guess what Charlie…that’s media for you. Honestly, I agree with the Kansas school paper. The students are sick of waiting around for their team to be fun to watch. Plus, so far this season, Charlie Weis has not shown he is ready to make moves that need to be made.

For example, the quarterback position is one that needs change to happen. Crist needs to be benched and Cummings needs to start. Will Weis make the move? Most likely not this week. Will he this season? Maybe. If I was the AD at Kansas, I’d be reading the school paper thinking “Is Charlie Weis really the man for the job?”

First, Through the Phog discusses the Week 2 performance by Dayne Crist during Kansas’ game against the Rice Owls. Also, if it raises a level of concern in Lawrence.

Should Kansas be concerned about Dayne Crist this season?

George: Dayne Crist has struggled in both of Kansas’s games this season. Even against South Dakota State, he struggled. Kansas should be worried. Yes, this is a long season, and there are still many games to be played, but conference play is here and it is time to improve immediately. It will be tough.

Ricky: The only good thing going for Kansas is that Dayne Crist and Charlie Weis have worked together before in 2010 at Notre Dame. With that being said, is that really a positive? In 2010, the Fighting Irish went 8-5, but it was a so-so season. With Crist starting, they went 1-3 to start the year and their three loses came against Michigan, Michigan State, and a ranked Stanford team. In my opinion, Dayne Crist is not that good of a starting quarterback. I feel like the Jayahwks should be concerned with Crist because they will be playing tough Big 12 opponents. Some of them include: Oklahoma, Kansas State, Texas, TCU, and West Virginia. If the Jayhawks want to win this season, they will need to rely on their two running backs, Pierson and Cox.

Kansas football head coach Charlie Weis and starting quarterback Dayne Crist met with the media yesterday to speak about the progress of the offense and the team.

Starting running back situation: Until James Sims returns to the foray, then it looks like Tony Pierson, and Taylor Cox will be the top two running backs. Brandon Bourbon rounds out the top three. Sims returns in week four for the Jayhawks.

Quarterback situation and any battles for positions: Crist is the starting quarterback, this is a for sure thing. Michael Cummings is ahead of Turner Baty for number two at the quarterback spot. According to Weis, 90 percent of the roster is set for the depth chart, which is made official next Tuesday. Few positions here and there still have battles. Weis is excited about the group of linebackers, including: Ben Heeny who changed positions and Anthony McDonald.

Weis is impressed with the depth at the wide receiver spot as is Crist. The former quarterback from Notre Dame also likes the versatility of the running backs. The one thing, the quarterback has been working on in camp is consistency. Crist is eager to hit the field vs South Dakota State on Sept. 1st.
