After a huge weekend on the track, the Kansas women’s track team picked up a couple more honors on Wednesday. Head coach Stanley Redwine was named head coach of the year, while sprinter Paris Daniels was named female performer of the year.

Redwine earlier this year was named Indoor head coach of the year. He has now won the honor three times. Redwine has been the head coach for 12 seasons at Kansas, with 11 of his athletes picking up individual titles. 117 All-Americans, and five Olympians have gone through the university.

Daniels earned 23 points over the weekend at the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Meet at Waco, Texas. She won the individual 200m dash, took the runner-up position at the 100m run and anchored the women’s 4×100 relay and 4×400 relay.

The Kansas women are ranked number one in the nation, while the Jayhawks men moved into their side of the poll at 22.

Next up for the team is a meet at West Virginia this weekend before the NCAA championships in Austin, Texas over May 23-25th.

The second ranked Kansas Jayhawks women’s track and field team leads the Big 12 conference meet with one more day of action to take place tomorrow. Kansas has amassed 53 points thus far, leading their closest competition by 12 points.

Francine Simpson won the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.67m (21 10″75) to win the event for the second straight season. Simpson’s jump was the best at Kansas ever, and the eighth best in the world this year. The Jayhawks picked up a second place finish in the same event from Andrea Geubelle, who jumped 639m (20 11″75).

Lindsey Vollmer scored 5,644 points in the woman’s heptathalon, easily winning the event. Vollmer, moved up to seventh place in the nation for the event. Rebecca Neville finished fifth place in the event.

The Kansas men had a solid day, not winning an individual event though putting up some solid numbers. Jonathan Fuller finished sixth in the men’s high jump, while Nick Giancana ended up seventh. Jonathan Miller ended up sixth in the men’s discus.

Tomorrow, brings more big names for the Jayhawks as Diamond Dixon and Paris Daniels both will race on the track in two events. Kansas men competing include Michael Stigler at the 400m hurdles, and Kyle Clemons who finished with the top time at the 400m dash.

Only two of five Big 12 conference teams in the NCAA tournament advanced to the third round. Top-seeded Kansas in the South region, and 10th-seeded Iowa State in the West region both made it to the round of 32. Oklahoma, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State all fell in second round contests.

Iowa State advanced to a game tomorrow vs the second-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes. The Cyclones throttled Notre Dame on Friday, 76-58 behind 19 points from Georges Niang. Iowa State was in control of the game throughout easily moving onto a meeting with the Buckeyes.

Kansas had their problems with Western Kentucky, yet managed to hold on and advance to a game with North Carolina on Sunday. The Jayhawks will look to make enough improvements to advance onto the Sweet 16 next week.

Oklahoma was no match for San Diego State in the second half of their second round game yesterday. Romero Osby led the Sooners with 22 points in the loss, yet the team failed to slow down Aztecs senior guard Jamal Franklin who scored 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Fourth-seeded Kansas State lost to 13th-seeded LaSalle in a shocker. The Wildcats fell behind early, only to rally and take the lead, but when it counted LaSalle was the better team. Jordan Henriquez keyed the Wildcats with 17 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

Oklahoma State was the victim of a team being seeded wrong in Oregon on Thursday. The Cowboys fell behind early and failed to recover in losing to the Ducks, 68-55.
