On Sunday afternoon in Lawrence at Hoglund Park, the Kansas Jayhawks swept conference rival Baylor with a 5-4 win. The same recipe was followed by the host team for the third straight day in the one-run win.

Kansas improved to 30-18 overall while dropping Baylor to 25-23. The Jayhawks moved one half-game ahead of the Bears in the Big 12 conference standings, as Kansas is now 12-9, Baylor fell to 11-9.

Jayhawks starting pitcher Frank Duncan after a rough start, settled down in the game, giving the Jayhawks a chance. Baylor scored twice in the first inning off a Jayhawks error and two bad passes. Duncan didn’t allow an earned run over six innings of pitching, dominating the Bears other then the first frame. Baylor starter Dillon Newman pitched six innings, giving up two runs and four hits. Reliever Ryan Smith lasted two innings, giving up two earned runs and five hits. Kansas closer Jordan Piche allowed one run and three hits, before getting pulled for Colin Toalson, who finished the game.

Kansas after spotting Baylor the two run lead, began their rally in the fourth inning with a run, before knotting the game up in the fifth. The Jayhawks took the lead in the seventh, only to have Baylor come back and take the lead once again in the top of the ninth. Kansas tied the game up again in the ninth thanks to a RBI single from Connor McKay. The game-winning run was stranded on third. Kansas took care of business in the tenth with a run from Jordan Dreiling.

Next up for Kansas is a meeting with Wichita State on Tuesday at Hoglund Park. A series vs Kansas State rounds out the season next weekend.

The Kansas Jayhawks used a four hit outing from Thomas Taylor to defeat conference rival Baylor, 3-2 on Friday night at Hoglund Park.

With the win, Kansas improved to 28-18 overall, while dropping Baylor to 25-21 on the season.

Taylor improved to 5-1 overall this year, and moved into fourth place on the Jayhawks all-time strikeout list. Baylor pitcher Matt Garner allowed three hits and three runs over eight innings of work. Garner struck out ten Jayhawks in the contest.

Baylor bolted to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Neither team scored again until the fifth inning, when the Jayhawks broke through. Justin Protacio nailed a pitch from Garner which was just enough to bring home two Jayhawks pushing Kansas to an 3-1 lead after Kai’ana Eldredge earlier in the inning provided the game tying RBI. The three runs was just enough for the Jayhawks as relievers Jordan Piche and Frank Duncan managed to shut down the Bears offense after Taylor left in the seventh inning after providing six and two/thirds innings of work.

Game two of the series is set for tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. central time at Hoglund Park. Wes Benjamin takes the mound for Kansas.
