The Utah Utes ran away with the game on Sunday, easily defeating Kansas, 13-6. Braden Anderson picked up four hits and three RBI’s in the game, pushing the Utes to the win.

Utah improved to 19-29 on the season, in dropping Kansas to 31-23. The Jayhawks after winnings six straight games, have now lost five straight games, with their regular season finale set for tomorrow vs Utah.

Dalton Carroll picked up the win for Utah, while Wes Benjamin struggled for Kansas, only lasting just over three innings before getting pulled after allowing seven runs, four of which were earned. Kansas committed two errors on the game, while Utah went for five.

Kansas got off to a great start with two runs scoring in the top of the first inning as Alex DeLeon and Justin Protacio both crossed home. Utah answered in their bottom of the inning, setting the tone for a high scoring output from the offense. Utah began burying Kansas with three unearned runs in the third inning, beginning with a throwing error from Jordan Dreiling. Things then unraveled for the Jayhawks, even further in the fourth inning with four more runs being scored by the host team. Frank Duncan, and Drew Morovick both were brought in from the bullpen to slow the bleeding, only Utah continued to score. Duncan gave up two earned runs, as did Morovick.

The two teams clash once more, tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. central time as Kansas looks to end the regular season on a bright note heading into the Big 12 Conference tournament which begins on Wednesday. The Jayhawks take on West Virginia in game one of the tournament. West Virginia defeated Kansas three straight games by one run, on April 26 and 27th, including a double-header on the latter day.

On Saturday in game one of a three game season-finale series, the Kansas Jayhawks lost to host Utah Utes, 1-0. The Utes scored the game’s lone run in the bottom of the ninth off Jayhawks closer of the year contender Jordan Piche. Utah batter Braden Andersen scored the game’s lone run after the team racked up three straight hits in the inning.

With the loss, Kansas fell to 31-22 overall, faltering in their fourth straight game. Utah improved to 18-29 on the season.

Kansas struggled trying to get hits off Utah starting pitcher Mitch Watrous, who improved to 4-3 on the season after giving up just two hits. Jayhawks starting pitcher Thomas Taylor was equally as dominant, allowing only four hits over eight innings of pitching. Kansas stranded five batters in the game off Watrous, though struggled to get batters on base. Dakota Smith and Ka’iana Aldredge picked up the Jayhawks hits in the game. Watrous did walk five Jayhawks and hit one batter, but Kansas failed to muster anything.

Tomorrow, the teams meet for game two of the series as Wes Benjamin takes the mound for Kansas. The game is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. central time.

On Sunday afternoon at Hoglund Park, the Kansas State Wildcats finished up a key sweep of rival Kansas with a 7-3 win. Wildcats pitcher Blake McFadden picked up the win over Jayhawks pitcher Frank Duncan. Kansas had a chance in the bottom of the ninth with bases loaded only to end the inning with an out.

Kansas State improved to 37-15 overall and 14-7 in conference play, while Kansas fell to 31-21 and 12-12. Kansas has one more series this year, vs Utah over next weekend in Salt Lake City.

The Wildcats built a 5-1 lead after scoring a run in the fifth inning, before Kansas rallied back some. Michael Suiter started off the sixth inning with a single, then Jordan Drieling walked. Later Suiter, and Drieling scored, cutting the lead down to two runs, before the Wildcats stopped the rally.

Kansas State added two more runs in the ninth, pushing the Jayhawks back even further. Jayhawks senior Kevin Kuntz singled with two outs to keep the game going in the bottom of the ninth. Then two walks were delivered to Kansas, before Drieling stepped up to the bat. The senior flied out, ending the game.
