There will be statues of Kansas football greats Gale Sayers and John Hadl revealed at the halftime of the Jayhawks’ game this Saturday.

Those involved in any way with Kansas football and football fans in general were shocked when Gale Sayers‘ death was announced a few days ago. Sayers had a massive impact at both the collegiate and professional levels, so it’s only right that he has a statue built at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

Sayers, along with fellow Jayhawk legend John Hadl, will have their statues unveiled at Kansas’ game this Saturday against the Oklahoma State Cowboys during halftime per KU Athletics. There aren’t two Jayhawks who are more deserving of the honor, considering both are two of the greatest of all time when it comes to Kansas football.

Sayers was named to the All-Big Eight team three times at Kansas, in addition to being a two-time All-American. He was taken with the No. 5 overall pick in the NFL Draft and went on to have a Hall of Fame career in the pros where he was selected to five first-team All-Pro teams.

Similar to Sayers, Hadl also had a fantastic career in college and as a pro. He was a two-time All-American for the Jayhawks, leading to a win in the Bluebonnet Bowl during his senior season. After Kansas, Hadl had a long career in the AFL and NFL where he was a four-time AFL All-Star and two-time NFL Pro Bowler.

Per Kansas Athletics, the two statues are eight feet tall, nearly 1,000 pounds, and will be located outside of the Anderson Family Football Complex. While the event will not be open to the public for attendance, the public will be able to watch either on kuathletics.com or on the video board if you’re in attendance for the Oklahoma State game.
