After coming off a three-game losing streak to West Virginia, #7 Baylor, and to TCU in a nail biter, the Kansas Lady Jayhawks (8-8, 1-3) hosted Texas Tech (6-9, 0-4), both of which were in search of their first conference win of the season.
The Lady Raiders managed to hold tight with Kansas for the first half, but a made free throw by Shauntai Nobles was the only Texas Tech points in the first 5+ minutes of the second half Saturday. It wasn’t until with 13 minutes remaining in the second half that the Lady Raiders acquired their first made basket from the field. The Lady Jayhawks used the same time to score 15 points and take off to a 48-25 lead and never looked back.
Junior Forward Chelsea Gardner led the Lady Jayhawks with 16 points in as many minutes, as well as 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Senior Guard CeCe Harper added 14 points and 7 assists while Junior Guard Natalie Knight contributed 13 points of her own on 5-10 shooting from the field.
Guard Amber Battle was the lone bright spot for the Texas Tech Lady Raiders, scoring 15 points on 5-13 shooting and notching rebounds as well. Battle was the only Texas Tech player in double digits.
The Lady Jayhawks dominated the rebounding battle 52-25, yet turned the ball over 18 times in their 67-46 victory over Texas Tech, giving Kansas their first conference win of the season.
The Lady Jayhawks are next in action January 15 as the travel to Austin to take on Texas.
