Kansas Volleyball Knocks Off Wichita State in Tournament Opener

The University of Kansas is hosting a leg of the Women’s Volleyball Tournament for the second year in a row. The Jayhawks squad finished with an overall record of 23-7 (12-4 Big 12) and earned sole proprietorship of 2nd in the Big 12 conference, only trailing the #1 overall Texas Longhorns. Finishing the season as the #23 overall ranked team in the country, the Jayhawks have been given a #14 seed bid in this years tournament.

With flashbacks of the 2012 Tournament, where Wichita State knocked off Kansas in the second round, the Jayhawks looked to exact revenge on the Shockers on their home floor in front of their home crowd.

According to reports from Kansascity.com, the Lady Jayhawks were indeed able to defeat Wichita State in four sets overall, resulting in a 3-1 victory.

KU has four first team All-Big 12 players in Senior Caroline Jarmoc, Juniors Chelsea Albers and Sarah McClinton, and Freshman Taylor Soucie. Jarmoc is 5th in the history of the program in kills and holds the school record for blocks, averaging over five per game. The Jayhawks also have the Big-12 Setter of the Year in Senior Erin McNorton.

The Jayhawks will face Creighton in the second round of the tournament today at 6:30 PM CST. The winner will punch their ticket to the Regional portion of the tournament in Los Angeles, California. Creighton was victorious earlier in the season, beating Kansas 3-1.
