Kansas Football: A Look at the Rice Defense

On Saturday in Houston, Texas, the Kansas Jayhawks square off vs the Rice Owls. The game is scheduled for a start time of 6:30 p.m. central time. Here is a look at the Owls defensive unit.

Rice returns 10 out of 11 players from last season’s starting defense. The defense is led by safety Philip Gaines who was a consensus Conference- USA selection as a junior. Gaines had to sit out of the Texas A&M game. Corey Frazier returned to the team after sitting out last year due to injury. Frazier batted down two Johnny Manziel passes. Michael Kutzler led the team in tackles with 11, as he started the game in place of Cameron Nwosu.

The Owls gave up 52 points two weeks ago vs the Aggies, though were in contention for a win until midway in the third quarter, when Texas A&M opened up a solid 38-21 lead. The unit has good athletes and will be further bolstered by Gaines and Nwosu if he returns.
