The University of South Dakota will face Kansas in the Jayhawks season opener on Saturday. The game begins at 6:00 p.m. central time in Lawrence.
South Dakota is coming off a 10-7 win over UC Davis, in a game that saw their defense pitch a shutout for most of the game, with their offense doing just enough to garner the victory.
Josh Vander Maten is the leader of the team’s offense as the quarterback. Vander Maten struggled some in the team’s opener, passing for just 91 yards with nine completions out of 17 attempts. Vander Maten added 16 rushes for 42 yards. Running backs Trevor Bouma, and Jordan Roberts are both capable of having a huge game for the Coyotes. Bouma rushed for 91 yards vs UC Davis, while Roberts added 67 yards on 10 carries.
Bouma, is also a very good at catching the ball out of the back-field as he made four receptions for 37 yards. Terrence Terry was Vander Maten’s other favorite target in grabbing four receptions for 48 yards.
The Coyotes are very apt to running the ball first and passing as a last resort. If Kansas can take the Coyotes away from this thinking, they could stand a chance of getting the win. Vander Maten as a dual threat quarterback makes things happen. Putting pressure on the quarterback will go well for Kansas.
