On Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, the Kansas women’s soccer team opened the exhibition season with a 1-0 victory over Nebraska-Omaha. Liana Salazar scored the lone goal of the match in the 20th minute on a penalty kick.
Overall, Kansas out-shot the Mavericks from Nebraska-Omaha, 26-5 including 9-0 on goal. Freshman forward Ashley Pankey was fouled in the Mavericks penalty box, leading to Salazar’s attempt on goal.
Jamie Fletcher and Ashley Williams led the team in shots with four apiece. Pankey and Jackie Georgeoulis, each put up three shots in the contest.
Mavericks goalie Meaghan Clark made eight saves on the contest. Jayhawks goalie in contrast, Kaitlyn Stroud had an easy game, with only five shots heading her direction, none on goal.
Next up for the Jayhawks is a road opener vs Arkansas on Aug. 23rd. Kickoff for the season-opener is 7:00 p.m. central time.. The Jayhawks after the Razorback tilt then head back home on Aug. 25th to face Pacific.
